2:00PM - 3:00PM SESSION #1: Specifying For Buildings That Do Not Leak (1 AIA SD CREDIT)
SPEAKER: Phil Kabza, FCSI, CCS, AIA – Partner of SpecGuy
DESCRIPTION: This presentation will help identify common contracting practices that inhibit properly coordinated building envelope construction. It will explain how to utilize industry resources supporting high performance building envelope design and construction and how to specify installer qualifications that reflect industry best practices for building envelope air and moisture control, along with how to provide long-term facility owner protection against leaks, and enhance LEED-NC and LEED-EB certification.

3:15PM - 4:15PM SESSION #2: Reconstruction in Afghanistan (1 AIA H/S/W CREDIT)
SPEAKER: Thomas Starbuck, AIA, NCARB – B&B Consultants
DESCRIPTION: This presentation will provide a view of Afghan life and environment after 35 years of war, including the creation of the Afghan National Army in a feudal tribal culture. Traditional construction methods and techniques, the design and construction in the vacume of building materials and trained workforce will be discussed, along with the clash between Western culture and local Muslim traditions and the cost of Reconstruction.


4:30PM - 5:30PM SESSION #3: Forensics in Architecture (1 AIA H/S/W CREDIT)
SPEAKER: Dennis J. Hall FAIA, FCSI – Hall Building Information Group
DESCRIPTION: This presentation will focus on the forensic and consulting work of HALL | Building Information Group and some of the litigation cases in which the firm is involved. Attendees will gain a better understanding of some of the possible pitfalls of design and construction phase services of design professionals including what the "standard of care" is and how design professionals are judged in a dispute, situations that often lead to design/construction disputes, and how quality assurance practices can help avoid disputes. Projects discussed will illustrate the importance of good construction documentation and construction administration.
